چکیده

A descriptive function method was used to measure the dctection, discrimination, and identiflcation pcr-formance of a large population of single neurons recorded from within the primary visual cortcx of thc monkey and the cat, along six stimulus dimensions: contrast. spatial position, orientation, spatial irequency, temporal fiequency, and direction of motion. First. the responses of single neurons were measurcd along each stimulus dimension, using analysis intervals comparable to a normal flxation intcrval (200 ms). Second, the measured responscs of each neuron were fitted with simple descriptivc lunctions, containing a few fi'ee parameters, fbr each stimulus dimension. These functions wcre found to account lbr approximately 9O7r: of the variancc in the measured response means and response standard deviations. (A detailed analysis of the relationship between the mean and the variancc showed that the variance is proportional to the mean.) Third, the parametcrs of the best-fitting descriptive f'unctions wcrc utilized in conjunction with Bayesian (optimal) decision theory to determine the detection, discrimination, and identification pcrfbrmance for each neuron, along cach st imulus dimension. For some of the cel ls in monkey, discrimination perfbmance was comparable to behavioral performance; for most olthe cells in cat, discrimination pcrformance was better than behavioral perfbrmance. The behavioral contrast and spatial-frequency discrimination functions wcre similar in shape to the envelope of the most sensitivc cells: they werc also similar to the discrimination functions obtained by optimal pooling of the entire population ol-cells. The statistics which summarize the parameters ol'the descriptive functions were used to estimatc the response ofthe visual coftex as a wholc to a complex natural image. The analysis suggcsts that individual corlical neurons can reliably signal precise infbnnation about thc location, size, and orientation of local image features.

Visual cortex neurons of monkeys and cats: temporal dynamics of the contrast response function.

Cortical neurons display two fundamental nonlinear response characteristics: contrast-set gain control (also termed contrast normalization) and response expansion (also termed half-squaring). These nonlinearities could play an important role in forming and maintaining stimulus selectivity during natural viewing, but only if they operate well within the time frame of a single fixation. To analyz...

Visual cortex neurons of monkeys and cats: temporal dynamics of the spatial frequency response function.

We measured the responses of striate cortex neurons as a function of spatial frequency on a fine time scale, over the course of an interval that is comparable to the duration of a single fixation (200 ms). Stationary gratings were flashed on for 200 ms and then off for 300 ms; the responses were analyzed at sequential 1-ms intervals. We found that 1) the preferred spatial frequency shifts throu...

The Expression implication of GDNF in ventral horn and associated remote cortex in rhesus monkeys with hemisected spinal cord injury

Objective(s): Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) can effectively promote axonal regeneration, limit axonal retraction, and produce a statistically significant improvement in motor recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the role in primate animals with SCI is not fully cognized. Materials and Methods:18 healthy juvenile rhesuses were divided randomly into six groups, obs...

Brief Communications Responses of Neurons in Primary Visual Cortex to Transient Changes in Local Contrast and Luminance

During normal saccadic inspection of natural images, the receptive fields of cortical neurons are bombarded with frequent simultaneous changes in local mean luminance and contrast, yet there have been no systematic studies of how cortical neurons respond to such stimulation. The responses of single neurons in the primary visual cortex of the cat were measured for 200 ms presentations of sine-wa...
